History

Casa Primicia before the restoration

Casa de la Primicia (XI century) is the oldest building of Laguardia village, the capital of Rioja Alavesa. From the beginning of the XV century here the church collected the Tithes and First offerings farming taxes.

That is how Casa Primicia started.

The Madrid Family

A vine grower from Laguardia with the spirit of a pioneer, rescued Casa Primicia from history.

Second and third generation of the Madrid family

The sons of Julian Madrid continue the legacy and increase it in the surrounds of the Laguardia village, without forgetting the roots, restoring the old and historic cellar, a small jewel in the heart of the people.

Today, Julian Madrid’s grandchildren honour him by carrying on the values he established at the vineyard.

Casa Primicia is a magic place, a temple of wine. Its well conserved cellars are silent witnesses to other periods and other people, and its restoration is the homage form the family to the dream of that vine grower from Laguardia called Julian Madrid.

Taking advantage of the gentle micro climate of the area, the Bodegas Casa Primicia vineyard extends from the estates situated in the foothills of the Cantabria Mountains to the plains near the River Ebro. Mountain range and river, the natural borders of a shire that lives by and for wine, the Rioja Alavesa.

The Carravalseca is the jewel of all the vineyards, an organic estate surrounded by olives in a unique environment, in an estate with the name of an endorheic natural protected lagoon.

Elaboration

The main objective is that of creating very special wines, but accessible to the majority.

The harvest is the most important moment of a year for a cellar and at Bodegas Casa Primicia, we use all our resources to assure that each one is unforgettable. After a meticulous period when the care and monitoring of the maturing process of vines occupies all our attention, finally the long-waited moment arrives: the harvest.

The process begins by transferring the harvested fruits as quickly as possible to the cellar, this way conserving the best condition of the same for their transformation during fermentation. After finalizing the fermentation processes, the wines will be destined according to their physical and organoleptic qualities to young or aged wines. This is a crucial moment. As from this moment the wines destined for ageing will remain for a certain time in barrels, later just like the young wine, they are clarified, filtered very smoothly and bottled.

The detailed process is apparently simple but full of complexities that have to be cared for and monitored in great detail with the final objective of obtaining the best quality in our wines.
